I’ve put together this list of police auctions and tow impound lots in Pennsylvania where you can find some great deals on used cars. Keep checking back, because they’re always getting new vehicles in. The best part is, these auctions are open to the public, so you don’t need a special license to bid.
Before you raise that bidding paddle, though, make sure you give any car you’re interested in a good once-over. If the auction lets you get up close and personal with the cars before the sale, definitely do it. I also recommend running the VIN online to learn more about the car’s history and any previous owners.
The main thing you are going to need is a valid I.D. and your form of payment. That’s it. It really is that easy to bid in a public car auction.

Now, if you’re looking for the kind of auctions where dealers like me go to find inventory, here’s a list of the more typical dealer and public auctions in Pennsylvania. These are the spots where you’ll find trade-ins, bank repos, and even the occasional police impound or seized car.
Pennsylvania’s got a ton of these auctions, so make sure to browse around and see what’s out there. A lot of them offer online bidding and can even help arrange shipping if you need it.

Mason Dixon Auto Auction – Greencastle, PA – Public car auctions are on Tuesdays at 5pm – 717-597-3121 – I’ve always liked Mason Dixon car auctions for the small, indie auction atmosphere. My Pro Tip: Their online bidding is for dealers-only, but the public may bid in the live auctions.
Northeast Pennsylvania Auto Auction – Scranton, PA – They are primarily a dealer wholesale auto auction, but they do hold public GSA sales with surplus gov vehicles and equipment. I highly recommend checking out the GSA auctions for well-maintained used vehicles. 570-207-2277
